The World Health Organization (WHO) regularly publishes statistics on road safety in the world on its site. It also has a mobile application for this purpose. It can be downloaded here.

Among other things, WHO also informs that the number of fatalities in road accidents in the whole world is steadily increasing every year. If in year 2000 almost 1.15 million people died in road accidents, then in year 2016 almost 1.35 million people died in road accidents. The main cause of mortality among children and young people (from 5 to 29 years old) is injuries received in road accidents.

When it comes to fatalities statistics in different countries, it is important to take into account not only the number of fatalities, but also the number of fatalities per 100000 of the population of the country, as the more people live in the country, the more fatalities occur. In this case, it becomes clear how serious this problem is.

Considering the number of fatalities in this table, for example, we can see that the number of fatalities in road accidents in USA is 7.5 times higher than in Ukraine, but if consider the number of fatalities per 100000 of population, Ukraine has worse results. In addition, WHO does not trust our statistics received from the Patrol Police as according to the data of the Ukrainian authorities, there were 3410 fatalities in road accidents in 2016, and according to the data of WHO, there were 4687 fatalities in road accidents. There have been discussions for many years that the calculations are done improperly in our country: for example, the fatalities in road accidents are not taken into account in several days or months.

In the rating of countries as to the number of fatalities in road accidents, among 181 countries Ukraine is on the 76th place (Russia is on 109th place). As to the number of fatalities in road accidents on 100000 of population, the statistics is the following: Belarus (13.7) and the Bahamas (13.8), the best situation is in Monaco (0), Federated States of Micronesia (1.9), Norway and Switzerland (2.7) and the worst situation is in Central African Republic (33.6), Democratic Republic of the Congo (33.7) and Liberia (35.9).

Unfortunately, Ukraine is among countries in the list of countries where there are no speed restrictions up to 50 km/h.

That is why the fatalities statistics due to overspeeding is so high in our country. However, the number of fatalities due to driving under the influence of alcohol intoxication is not very high.
